The Month of June

By Catholic tradition, the whole of June is consecrated to the Sacred Heart.

Why this practice

Just as May belongs to the Blessed Virgin, June belongs to the Sacred Heart. The feast falls in this month, and the Church has long given the entire month over to its devotion: home altars, daily Litanies, special parish observances.

It is a practice well-suited to families. A small home altar with the image of the Sacred Heart, flowers, a candle — and a brief gathering each evening to pray the Litany or a decade of the rosary — sanctifies the month and forms the children's memory.

How to begin

1Set up a small home altar at the start of the month: the Sacred Heart image, a candle, perhaps flowers.
2Pray the Litany of the Sacred Heart daily during June — alone or as a family.
3Add one new practice for the month — even a small one — that you keep through to the feast.
4Renew your consecration on the feast day at month's end.

The month of the Sacred Heart is given to us each year as a retreat in the world: thirty days of returning to His love.

A prayer for this practice

Sacred Heart of Jesus, may this month belong wholly to Thee. Let each of its days be a step closer to Thy love, that I may arrive at Thy feast having lived in Thy presence.

Amen.
