The Morning Offering

Begin every day by offering all your prayers, works, joys, and sufferings to the Sacred Heart.

Why this practice

The Morning Offering is the oldest and most practical of the daily devotions to the Sacred Heart. With one short prayer, the whole day — its meetings, its tedium, its small irritations and small joys — is gathered up and placed on the altar.

It is also the foundation of the Apostleship of Prayer, by which the Pope's monthly intention becomes one's own. To say the Morning Offering is to live the day as a member of the Church praying with one heart for the world.

How to begin

1Pray the Morning Offering the moment your feet touch the floor, before anything else. Print it and tape it by your bed if needed.
2Make the offering with intention — not as a recited formula, but as a deliberate act of will.
3Include the Pope's intention for the month (published by the Apostleship of Prayer).
4If you forget, offer the rest of the day at any moment. The Heart accepts a day half-given.

By the Morning Offering we place the day, before it has begun, into the hands of the One who alone knows what it will hold.

A prayer for this practice

O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer Thee my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world. I offer them for all the intentions of Thy Sacred Heart: the salvation of souls, reparation for sin, the reunion of all Christians. I offer them for the intentions of our bishops and of all Apostles of Prayer, and in particular for those recommended by our Holy Father this month.

Amen.
